7 Things to Do on the Water Near Bigfork, Montana

Bigfork is a useful base for a Flathead Lake day, but not every waterfront activity happens on the same body of water. Flathead Lake, the Swan River, and Peterson Lake offer different experiences. Here are seven ways to plan a day around the water, with the locations kept clear.

1. Walk the shoreline at Wayfarers

The Wayfarers unit of Flathead Lake State Park sits near Bigfork on Flathead Lake’s northeast shore. Start here if you want a public lakeside stop without arranging a tour. Bring shoes suitable for uneven ground, and check the official Wayfarers page for current access information, fees, and facilities before you go.

2. Bring a picnic to the lake

Wayfarers has picnic facilities in a forested setting. Pick up food in town and allow time to sit by the lake rather than packing several activities into one afternoon. Use designated areas, follow posted food-storage rules, and pack out your rubbish. A lakeside picnic is also an option when your group wants scenery without paddling.

3. Try a daytime clear kayak tour at Somers Bay

RMG’s Flathead Lake clear kayak tour takes place at Somers Bay, across the north end of the lake from Bigfork. It is a separate destination, so leave travel time between town and your confirmed meeting point.

A transparent hull gives you a view of the water below when conditions allow. Depth, glare, waves, and water clarity affect what you can see; fish sightings are a possibility, not a promise. Check the booking page for current dates and availability.

4. Book an LED sunset paddle on Peterson Lake

RMG’s Bigfork-area LED sunset tour explores Peterson Lake near Bigfork. This experience is not on Flathead Lake. The route includes sheltered coves and channels, with illuminated clear kayaks as daylight fades.

Plan for a 90-minute paddle and follow the arrival instructions in your booking confirmation. Bring an extra layer for the return. Sunset colors, stars, and wildlife depend on the conditions that evening. Book through RMG; the tour meeting point is not a general public launch.

5. Walk the Swan River Nature Trail

For a change from lake views, consider the Swan River Nature Trail in Bigfork. It follows the river corridor rather than Flathead Lake’s shore. The Bigfork visitor guide includes the trail among local walking options.

Treat this as a walk, not a recommendation to launch a recreational kayak into the river. Choose a turnaround that fits your group, check local trail notices, and bring suitable footwear.

6. Plan your own paddle with a clear kayak rental

If you prefer to choose your own destination, RMG offers clear kayak rentals with Bigfork pickup. Six-hour and 24-hour options let you build the paddle into a longer day. Ask about the LED add-on or private-lake option when booking.

A self-pickup rental means planning transportation, launch access, and your return. Confirm that your vehicle and carrying system suit the kayak before reserving. Check the rules for your chosen waterbody and follow the rental team’s transport instructions. Renting equipment does not give access to private shorelines.

7. Finish with time in Bigfork village

Keep a dry-land option in your plans: a meal, gallery visit, or stroll through the village can complement a lake outing. Check individual businesses’ hours before making a special trip, particularly outside summer. If wind or thunderstorms interrupt your water plans, move indoors rather than waiting on an exposed shoreline.

Choose one main water activity

For a simple itinerary, pair a shoreline stop with either a daytime Flathead Lake paddle or an evening Peterson Lake tour. Avoid treating them as the same location. Use your booking confirmation for the exact meeting point and arrival time.

Water conditions can change throughout the day. A sheltered-looking shoreline and a late start do not guarantee calm water. Wear the supplied properly fitted PFD, follow your guide’s directions, and be prepared for a weather-related change.
